Rise to the Occasion

Hi Babe,

Thank you for your letter.

What’s the worst that can happen if you ask for more money? Asking for money is something so many of us (notably women) struggle with.

Yes, the pandemic has changed the landscape of many businesses and workplaces, but that doesn’t mean that you cannot have an honest dialogue with your boss about your needs. It does not mean you are selfish.

To initiate the conversation, prepare yourself with information about what you have achieved: your development over the past seven years and the value you add to the business. You mentioned that you have a good relationship with your manager, so if pitched well they will respect you all the more for it. After enjoying your job and being with them this length of time, it shouldn’t be surprising to them that you would want further development and a salary increase.

Now, you must be prepared that the business may not currently have the budget to increase your salary immediately, but having the conversation allows you to understand timeframes and promotion prospects, and informs your manager of your future expectations.

Also, I recommend forecasting your potential house move and have a clear idea of when you would like to have a baby. These things can feel imminent but could perhaps be in a year or more. Therefore, if you wanted to look for another job you would have the time to do so and secure the salary and benefits you desire.

The anxiety is coming up for you because you feel like you don't have control of the situation. Rise to the occasion, have the convo, and brainstorm ALL your options. You have more power to get what you want than you know! I would advise you to update your CV and LinkedIn profile, and view yourself as the fantastic candidate and colleague you are. When you see what you bring to the table it helps you lean into conversations that can feel tricky. Once you’ve had the chat you can start creating your future.

Good luck doll, you’ve got so much to look forward to!

With love, Malee
